Slow Down in the Mountains: Studio Riviera at Briol

High above the valley in Barbian, South Tyrol, there is a place that seems to follow its own rhythm.

Briol is not a hotel that tries to feel new. Quite the opposite. Its architecture, old timber, furniture and quiet rooms carry the traces of the people who have lived and stayed here before. Time is visible — and that is part of its beauty.

We came to Briol with a selection of Studio Riviera ceramics and set two tables: one outside on the terrace, looking across the mountains, and another inside the old Stube.

Two very different settings. Yet both felt completely natural.

Things Worth Keeping

What stayed with us most about Briol is its relationship with time.

Things have been preserved rather than constantly replaced. Wood is allowed to age. Furniture carries its history. The architecture doesn’t ask for attention, but the longer you stay, the more details you begin to notice.

There is something in this approach that feels close to Studio Riviera.

Our ceramics are made by artisans in Southern Italy, where every piece passes through many hands before reaching the table. Small differences in shape, glaze and surface remain visible. They are not flaws to be corrected, but traces of how something was made.

For us, longevity is not simply about durability.

A plate can last for decades and still feel outdated after two years. We want to make objects you continue to reach for — pieces that become part of breakfasts, dinners with friends and ordinary Tuesday evenings.

Things made to be used. And kept.

A Table Above the Valley

On the terrace at Briol, we kept things simple.

Studio Riviera plates and bowls, linen, glasses, food — with the mountains doing most of the decorating.

It was the kind of table we love most. Not overly styled or too considered. A table that looks as though people are about to sit down, pass plates around and stay much longer than they originally planned.

Later, we moved inside.

The old Stube could hardly feel more different. Dark timber surrounds the room, the light becomes softer and everything feels a little more intimate.

The ceramics changed with it.

That is something we have always liked about objects with a strong but simple character. They don’t need a particular interior around them. They find their place — on a terrace in the mountains, in a centuries-old room or on the kitchen table at home.

The Art of Slowing Down

Briol is also a reminder that slowing down doesn’t need to become another thing to accomplish.

You walk. You read for a while. Breakfast stretches into the morning. Lunch takes as long as it takes.

And perhaps that is why setting a table here felt so right.

A table asks us to stop for a moment. To sit down, share food, talk, look around. The plates and bowls are only a small part of it, but they become witnesses to all those moments over time.

We like the idea that the objects we make at Studio Riviera might have a long life like that.

Come for the mountains and the architecture. Stay for the long breakfasts, walks through the surrounding landscape and afternoons when checking the time suddenly feels unnecessary.
